On behalf of Ponder Diversity Group LLC and its distinguished team of attorneys and consultants, I extend a heartfelt tribute to my beloved mother, Dr. Gwindelle Wilson Ponder, an award-winning college mathematics professor and public school teacher whose life embodied social justice. She was not just my mother but also the inspiration behind my successful legal career in the public and private sectors and the formation of this legal consultancy, which is committed to facilitating inclusive and legally defensible procurement and employment practices nationwide.
Dr. Gwindelle Ponder's journey began under the nurturing guidance of her parents, the late Reverend and Mrs. (Flossie Farmer) Dennis N. Wilson.
Her mother was related to civil rights activist and leader, James Leonard Farmer Jr. who served alongside Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton. Born and raised in South Carolina along with her two brothers, Dr. Ponder’s path led her to academic excellence, graduating from the Avery Institute (high school) in Charleston. She pursued her passion for mathematics, earning her B.A. from Fisk University in Nashville, followed by an M.A. from Columbia University in New York, and ultimately achieving her Ph.D. in mathematics and education from Heed University in Broward County, Florida.
In her personal life, she married Alvin F. Ponder II and together they welcomed three children into the world, including me and my two brothers. Though life took its twists and turns, her devotion to our education, development, and success never wavered. Her impact extended far beyond our family, touching countless lives in our community with her caring guidance and unwavering support for all people, regardless of their ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, disability or age.
Dr. Ponder's dedication to education was manifested in her 16 years teaching mathematics in the Chicago Public School system, with 11 of those years spent at Wendell Phillips High School. Subsequently, she served as a mathematics professor at Kennedy-King College for 19 years, where her contributions were nothing short of exemplary. Her outstanding professional achievements, including the Distinguished Professorship Award, underscored her commitment to teaching, leadership, public service and the enhancement of the academic community.
Beyond her official duties, Dr. Ponder's impact was felt through her involvement in various committees and initiatives aimed at enhancing student experiences and academic excellence. The committees on which she served included the Faculty Council Committee, Mentor Advisor for Retention Committee, and the Rank Committee that she chaired. She co-chaired the Welch Memorial Mathematics Competition and coordinated the presentations of prominent figures to speak at the college to her students. She was instrumental in establishing the Mathematics Laboratory at Kennedy-King College and spearheaded initiatives such as the mathematics competition and student tutoring programs.
Dr. Ponder's influence extended well beyond academia into civic and community realms. Her involvement in church stewardship at The Congregational Church of Park Manor, Chicago Area Fisk University alumni association, Chicago Public Schools Local School Council, and charitable endeavors left an indelible mark on the fabric of society. She was a beacon of leadership, compassion, and philanthropy, as evidenced by her contributions to organizations such as the Women's Auxiliary Board of Provident Hospital, the Vernon Park Community Council, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Women’s Board of DuSable Museum of African American History.
Yet, Dr. Ponder's legacy transcends her professional and community achievements. She was a woman of many diverse talents and interests, from her culinary skills to her love for art, bridge, dogs and travel. Her zest for life, coupled with her verbal eloquence, keen intellect and impeccable sense of style, made her a beloved figure in Chicago and throughout her community.
As we reflect on Dr. Gwindelle Wilson Ponder's life and legacy, we are reminded of her enduring impact on the lives she touched from all walks of life. Her faith, wisdom, empathy for others, generosity and unwavering integrity continue to inspire us, driving our firm’s unwavering commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion wherever we can.
Thank you for joining us in honoring the remarkable life of Dr. Gwindelle Wilson Ponder, my beloved mother, mentor, soror and best friend.
With heartfelt gratitude and much love,
