Government Contractors Business Forum (GCBF)

The Government Contracting Business Forum (GCBF), established by PDG leadership about 15 years ago, is renowned for aiding established government contractors and consultants across multiple sectors. It aims to enhance their visibility, marketability, and success within the government marketplace. GCBF meetings focus on current and pending developments in government procurement regulations, policies, legislation, contract opportunities, and related best practices. The meetings, which include high-level discussions about new and cutting-edge procurement, contracting, business and legal information, provide the ideal setting for contractors and consultants of all sizes to network with each other and representatives of select agencies.

The ultimate goal of the GCBF is to level the playing field and provide effective networking and educational opportunities to government contractors and subcontractors that do not retain lobbyists. Please be advised that meetings of the GCBF were discontinued prior to the pandemic and will reconvene at the Willis Tower by 2025.

Why has DEI Become So Important?

Not only is DEI the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. Many studies have documented the vast benefits of DEI, including its capacity to promote shared experiences; provide broader range of perspectives; understand customers better; increase customer loyalty; receive faster and better solutions; develop larger and better talent pool; improve workplace productivity; increase employee retention; improve business innovation; generate better financial performance; and gain global appeal and improve reputation.

2024 DEI Statistics in the U.S.

Organizations seeking to receive the benefits of DEI should consider these important statistics:

1) Over 20% of women in the workplace have reported a decline in their support which is causing them to consider other employment options.

2) Over 80% of women who have been working remotely do not want to return back to their offices to work.

3) Two in three employees do not believe their employer supports their mental health and believe it impacts their daily productivity.

4) 89% of U.S. companies either have a DEI strategy or plan to implement one.

5) 58% of companies have provided DEI training to their employees, focused on unconscious bias and microaggressions, which has received positive feedback.

Recognition of PDG Leadership for DEI Achievement

The leadership of PDG has received numerous awards, accolades, and recognitions throughout their careers for their strong legal acumen, extensive community engagement and effective diversity advocacy. These acknowledgements were given by some of the top organizations in the U.S., including the U.S. Small Business Administration, National Women of Achievement, National Forum for Black Public Administrators, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, the City of Chicago/Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and Crain’s Chicago Business.

A MESSAGE

FROM THE CEO

Anita Ponder

Chief Executive Officer, General Counsel, and Chief of Diversity

Welcome to the leading boutique legal consultancy of Ponder Diversity Group LLC (PDG), where we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for government agencies, large corporations and nonprofit organizations. My personal journey in the legal profession is deeply rooted in my upbringing on the south side of Chicago under the tutelage of my remarkable mother, Dr. Gwindelle Wilson Ponder. Her legacy as an award-winning college and high school mathematics professor and community advocate for social justice profoundly influenced my resolve to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are more than just ideals; they are the core foundation of our firm’s mission and professional services.

We, at the law firm of Ponder Diversity Group LLC (PDG), are deeply honored to have been recognized by the State of Illinois during its Black History Month Business Recognition Event, celebrating the outstanding achievements of emerging businesses in Illinois. This special event was spearheaded by Commissioner Bruce Montgomery of the Commission on Equity and Inclusion (CEI) who presented a Proclamation from Governor JB Pritzker to Anita J. Ponder, our firm’s esteemed CEO and General Counsel.

PDG, a specialty boutique law firm located at the Willis Tower, is proud to be among the local firms recognized by CEI and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Office of Economic Equity and Empowerment (OEEE) which are committed to providing fair access to employment and contracting opportunities to minorities, women, persons with disabilities and veterans.

Throughout the past few decades, PDG representatives have proudly represented the state, City, County and other agencies nationwide on significant legal and consulting matters, showcasing a dedication to fostering inclusive employment and business environments. We are delighted to be publicly recognized by the State of Illinois for our professional, legal and philanthropic services which significantly impact marginalized communities.

Bravo to Governor JB Pritzker, Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias for recognizing the many challenges faced by small businesses and championing diversity, entrepreneurship, and business development in Illinois. Their resolute leadership and support during these difficult times for our nation, including the Illinois government contracting community, are highly commendable.

Thank you so much to the State of Illinois for this special recognition of Ponder Diversity Group. We appreciate it.

I am proud to be an American.  As an attorney and officer of the court, it is my duty - and all of us - to speak out to protect our democracy. This is our country. Let the historic, profound NFL Super Bowl halftime performance of Pulitzer Prize winning artist Kendrick Lamar continue to inspire all law-abiding Americans to express themselves on any platform - whether it’s on a worldwide stage…. or LinkedIn.  Everyone should uphold the rule of law and be held accountable to abide by it. We did not have a coronation in America. It was an election with more to follow.  Never forget that all persons are equal under the law.  Do not back down to anyone and give up your freedom, rights, and equal opportunity to achieve your goals. Continue to compete, perform and excel on any and every platform - like Kendrick; and fight for equity and inclusion in every sector and industry. Let’s proudly stand tall with our shoulders back and heads high to lead the way for our community and all Americans. Let’s organize with our allies across the boundaries of gender, ethnicity, race, disability and other protected identities. Let’s protest anti-DEIA establishments. Let’s continue to pray. And, have faith in the judicial process and the power of our purse. Our voices will be heard and we will be respected.

Although I’m not a big fan of football…or rap music, I always tune in to watch the NFL halftime show.  It’s a masterclass on “DEIA”, featuring the best talent in the entertainment industry on a worldwide platform. This year, the Super Bowl halftime performance was a powerful, commanding creative choice by Pulitzer Prize winning rapper Kendrick Lamar - the first solo hip-hop artist to ever headline the show.  It was a moment of cultural reckoning, a challenge to mainstream narratives, and an assertion of Black artistry and symbolism. It included masterful appearances by 22-time Grammy Award-winner Samuel Jackson, dressed eloquently as Uncle Sam, and Tennis Legend Serena Williams.

Make no mistake about it - Mr. Lamar sent a profound, patriotic message of inclusion to the president and the world with an intellectually complex, culturally significant, mesmerizing performance by Black performers in red, white and blue tracksuits who embodied the American flag … without sexually exploiting or demeaning women. Mr. President - this country was built by Black people who have no intentions of going back to the days when we were enslaved (literally and figuratively) and not acknowledged, valued or respected for our contributions. Black excellence was on full display at the NFL Super Bowl for you and the world to see. And, despite political opposition, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has reaffirmed the league’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As a Black female attorney and DEIA/business diversity practitioner, the Super Bowl performance was particularly meaningful after another Black female attorney - New York Attorney General Letitia James  - recently secured a major legal victory. She blocked the Department of Government Efficiency, controlled by Trump and Musk, from accessing the private data of millions of Americans. The irony here is that non-Black women helped to elect this anti-DEIA, anti-Democracy, anti-American group of billionaires to lead our nation who are determined to put an end to the diversification of our country. And, it’s badass Black women, with the support of our brothers and others, who are protecting us from them.

Let the NFL Super Bowl game, the historic halftime performance, and the DEIA commitment of the league and other organizations throughout the nation, serve as a warning to America and the administration. We will not back down and give up our freedom, rights or opportunities to achieve our professional and business goals. We will compete with anyone on any and every platform - like Kendrick, Samuel and Serena; and continue to fight for equity and inclusion in every sector and every industry. We will proudly stand tall with our shoulders back and heads high to lead the way with our allies. Our voices will be heard and we will be respected.

"The American dream belongs to all of us."  Kamala Harris

I had the privilege of working for Mayor Harold Washington - before there was “DEI”.

I was the Director of Contract Compliance, responsible for enforcing the Mayor's Executive Order which mandated that a percentage of the City’s annual procurement budget be spent with disadvantaged, minority and women business enterprises (DBE/MBE/WBEs) and that contracts have subcontracting goals. Bidders were required to submit an Utilization Plan, identifying their DBE/MBE/WBE subcontractors and EEO participation or risk losing their contract.

Oftentimes, contractors would express their staunch disapproval of the City's participation requirements, claiming they couldn’t find any “qualified” DBE/MBE/WBEs. We would politely refer them to the City's Directory of Certified Firms. But when they told us they never faced these problems doing business with the City, we reminded them there was a new sheriff in town who believes in equity and inclusion. Suddenly, they were able to find qualified minority and women-owned subcontractors. Unfortunately, some of the bidders ended up in prison for defrauding the City with “front” DBE/MBE/WBE companies.

Mayor Washington's administration not only reflected the majestic diversity of our city, but it played a pivotal role in fostering the development of a number of successful diverse businesses. These businesses significantly contributed to the City's economic development. Chicago inspired agencies nationwide to adopt similar programs and policies, promoting the growth and success of many small businesses and boosting employment across all communities. Today, Chicago continues to stand as a beacon to the nation that diversity actually does work.

Because these initiatives have been effective nationwide, there appears to be a concerted effort to dismantle DEI by making people believe that it facilitates the unlawful hiring and promotion of unqualified Blacks. This claim is blatantly false and offensive. In reality, women (excluding Blacks) have been the primary beneficiaries of DEI, and have been primarily responsible for implementing these programs in many sectors. And now, many of them are rejecting DEI and supporting anti-DEI actions against their own interests.

Kudos to government agencies, state attorney generals, diversity practitioners and others who are proactively supporting DEI.  Now is the time for us to stand together to protect the rights of all Americans against discriminatory practices.  It's not only about diversity, equity and inclusion; it’s about recommitting to justice and equality.

May Mayor Washington Rest in Power knowing that his bold, inclusive leadership was not in vain and that his legacy continues to lift our nation to reach greater heights.

Martin Luther King III, son of civil rights icon Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., thinks it would be unwise to ignore his father’s economic message to America…... or let others continue to misrepresent it.

Dr. King thought that poverty was one of three societal evils, in addition to racism and war or militarism. And, that economic justice — access to employment with equitable pay, health care, and home ownership — should be the focus of any true liberation movement.

King’s family believes that his tragic demise was due to his powerful advocacy for a radical redistribution of wealth and equal opportunity for all Americans – negatively referred to now as “DEI”.  Like many Americans, King’s family wants our nation to embrace Dr. King’s beliefs — including his economic philosophy, instead of the “whitewashed version” of those beliefs.

The United States faces a real dilemma today where we are asking ourselves – who are we?

Have we abandoned our core values of freedom, equality and justice?

Will we strive for love, compassion, kindness and peace….or will we succumb to anger, hatred and retribution?

Will we protect our fundamental rights, freedoms and opportunities for all Americans….or lose our democracy.

Does humanity, morality, integrity, empathy, respect and character still matter? Our answers to these critical questions, and the future choices that we make remain ours – the American people.

As Vice President Harris so eloquently stated during her concession speech: “The light of America's promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting….while I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign—the fight: the fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness, and the dignity of all people.…..Don't ever stop trying to make the world a better place.”

Let’s stand firmly on the front lines with the King family during these challenging times by lifting them up, as well as our fellow Americans, by supporting legislation that strengthens and advances marginalized communities; by supporting the proposed amendment to the constitution of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) that would prohibit sex discrimination; and by continuing to advocate for a leveled playing field in education, employment and procurement that provides equal opportunities to all Americans.

Together, by embodying Dr. King's vision and recommitting to justice and equality, we can make America truly great.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎈🎉🇺🇸 As we bid farewell to 2024, I am deeply grateful to our dear friends, clients, connections, and followers who share my firm’s unwavering commitment to equity and inclusion. We hope you were inspired by my straight talk. My recent posts and comments served as a rallying call to women, Blacks, other marginalized individuals and our allies who refuse to stand by and watch as our democracy, freedoms and rights are threatened in a divided nation.

Ponder Diversity Group LLC, a boutique law firm with a leading legal and consulting practice, represents public and private organizations dedicated to advancing supplier and workplace diversity in procurement and contracting matters.  We are empowered by your support. Diversity, equity and inclusion or DEI are not just buzzwords to us - it’s a business imperative that drives success in a global marketplace by enhancing cultural awareness, policies, practices and productivity. Collaborating with clients who champion diversity has resulted in remarkable outcomes for all communities.

Unfortunately, many do not know the actual meaning and purpose of DEI and seek to undermine its significance.  Embracing diversity leads to innovation, growth and a deeper understanding of an organization’s customers and clients. Those who oppose DEI and endorse discriminatory beliefs are not aligned with our values. We believe in doing business with those who share our compassion for marginalized communities, our integrity to support them, and our courage to uplift them.

As we reflect on the significant progress that has been made by the struggles of our ancestors and strive for a more inclusive society, we seek partnerships with organizations in 2025 that are committed to positive change. This pivotal moment in our nation's history calls for unity, action and resilience. Join us in shaping a future where everyone is valued and respected. Nothing less should be accepted.

Do you agree?

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I join America in mourning the death of arguably the most prolific author and poet in our nation. Yolande Cornelia Giovanni Jr., who was dubbed as “Nikki”, did it all - as a poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator. An award-winning poet, her work includes poetry anthologies, poetry recordings, and nonfiction essays, and covers topics ranging from race and social issues to children's literature.

Nikki was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and attended my distinguished HBCU alma mater, Fisk University in Nashville. She gained initial fame as one of the foremost authors of the Black Arts Movement. Influenced by the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements of the period, her early work provides an impactful African-American perspective. She later began writing children's literature and co-founded a publishing company to provide a forum for other African-American women writers. Her works discussed social issues, human relationships and hip hop. Nikki received numerous prestigious awards and holds 27 honorary degrees from various colleges and universities. She died at 81 years old.

We love you Nikki and will always honor your exceptional artistry, influence and legacy by continuing to carry the torch of justice to advance equity and the inclusion, including the works of Black authors and books in libraries and educational institutions throughout our nation. Black history is American history. Your poetry has touched many lives and made us a better nation. We will not let your work be forgotten. May you Rest In Peace, in Power our majestic sister and forever inspire us to pursue our dreams, hone our talents and uplift others whenever we can.♥️
