Government Contractors Business Forum (GCBF)

The Government Contracting Business Forum (GCBF), established by PDG leadership about 15 years ago, is renowned for aiding established government contractors and consultants across multiple sectors. It aims to enhance their visibility, marketability, and success within the government marketplace. GCBF meetings focus on current and pending developments in government procurement regulations, policies, legislation, contract opportunities, and related best practices. The meetings, which include high-level discussions about new and cutting-edge procurement, contracting, business and legal information, provide the ideal setting for contractors and consultants of all sizes to network with each other and representatives of select agencies.

The ultimate goal of the GCBF is to level the playing field and provide effective networking and educational opportunities to government contractors and subcontractors that do not retain lobbyists. Please be advised that meetings of the GCBF were discontinued prior to the pandemic and will reconvene at the Willis Tower by 2025.

Why has DEI Become So Important?

Not only is DEI the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. Many studies have documented the vast benefits of DEI, including its capacity to promote shared experiences; provide broader range of perspectives; understand customers better; increase customer loyalty; receive faster and better solutions; develop larger and better talent pool; improve workplace productivity; increase employee retention; improve business innovation; generate better financial performance; and gain global appeal and improve reputation.

2024 DEI Statistics in the U.S.

Organizations seeking to receive the benefits of DEI should consider these important statistics:

1) Over 20% of women in the workplace have reported a decline in their support which is causing them to consider other employment options.

2) Over 80% of women who have been working remotely do not want to return back to their offices to work.

3) Two in three employees do not believe their employer supports their mental health and believe it impacts their daily productivity.

4) 89% of U.S. companies either have a DEI strategy or plan to implement one.

5) 58% of companies have provided DEI training to their employees, focused on unconscious bias and microaggressions, which has received positive feedback.

Recognition of PDG Leadership for DEI Achievement

The leadership of PDG has received numerous awards, accolades, and recognitions throughout their careers for their strong legal acumen, extensive community engagement and effective diversity advocacy. These acknowledgements were given by some of the top organizations in the U.S., including the U.S. Small Business Administration, National Women of Achievement, National Forum for Black Public Administrators, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, the City of Chicago/Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and Crain’s Chicago Business.

A MESSAGE

FROM THE CEO

Anita Ponder

Chief Executive Officer, General Counsel, and Chief of Diversity

Welcome to the leading boutique legal consultancy of Ponder Diversity Group LLC (PDG), where we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for government agencies, large corporations and nonprofit organizations. My personal journey in the legal profession is deeply rooted in my upbringing on the south side of Chicago under the tutelage of my remarkable mother, Dr. Gwindelle Wilson Ponder. Her legacy as an award-winning college and high school mathematics professor and community advocate for social justice profoundly influenced my resolve to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are more than just ideals; they are the core foundation of our firm’s mission and professional services.

This is BS. Let’s call a spade a spade. The new term, MEI—Merit, Excellence, Intelligence which has emerged to replace DEI  (ie, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) is a pathetic attempt by conservatives to justify their rejection of initiatives to “level the playing field”.

Here’s the problem. By focusing on merit, excellence, and intelligence, we perpetuate elitism and exclusion, reinforcing biases and marginalizing diverse individuals, particularly qualified Blacks, other people of color and women.

Whereas, DEI acknowledges the systemic discrimination of marginalized, underserved communities and disadvantaged individuals. MEI overlooks structural institutional barriers that need to be dismantled to create a level playing field.

Meritocracy falsely assumes there is currently a level playing field for everyone where success is solely determined by one’s individual abilities and efforts. However, systemic inequalities create unequal opportunities in the workplace and in business, leading to subjective, misleading assessments of so-called merit.

Before we start promoting “MEI “ and/or other new terminology, let’s critically examine the implications of the framework to ensure it promotes inclusivity and equity for all. If it doesn’t, let’s call it out and stay focused on achieving our goals.❤️

I am a CEO. I am a Lawyer.

Both are “BLACK JOBS”.

Anybody can do any job!

Just give them training, an opportunity, support  - and get the fu_k out their way.

Many Blacks and women, like me, currently have and have had jobs that were intended for “others”….which seems to be the problem with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

It encourages organizations to consider and hire women, Blacks, other people of color and disabled individuals for all employment and contracting opportunities for which we are qualified and/or capable of performing.

Several white men made a point of telling me that they had a problem with my last post because they thought the images (of birds!) that I reposted were AI generated. They missed or simply ignored the point of the message. My repost was about the beauty of diversity, equity and inclusion - not about AI. Although the post has generated a lot of attention, I’m restating parts of it here because of these incredibly beautiful Black faces…

Just like the breathtaking array of colors and hair textures of some of the most beautiful women in the world, our society is enriched by the diversity of its people - by their different races, ethnicities, genders, nationalities, religions, disabilities, age groups and more. Each individual brings a unique, important perspective, background, and experience to the table, painting our world with vibrant hues of culture, identity, and talent. This is what makes our nation truly great.

Let's unite to celebrate this richness and embrace the beauty of our diversity. Just as every skin tone and feature adds to the magnificence of a women’s face, every person contributes to the tapestry of humanity within our society. Together as a nation, let's rise to new heights, united in our appreciation for the extraordinary mosaic of our diversity.♥️

DIDN’T EARN IT (DEI) is actually somewhat funny….

We should smile when we hear this and stay focused on our goal - to crush racism.  We need to remain vigilant about stopping folks who actually didn’t earn it from continuing to use their privilege to deny communities of color and women an equal opportunity to compete on merit.

DEI is not just about empowering Black people, but about advocating for everyone to be treated equally and equitably under the law, regardless of gender, ethnicity, race, nationality, disability, age, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status…or political affiliation.

I understand the pushback against DEI, particularly from white men who have historically had a helping hand and head start in obtaining higher education, and achieving their professional and business accomplishments. DEI threatens to end their white privilege and dismantle white supremacy by promoting a level playing field based on merit. This is something that most people actually support.

The Black community is committed to continuing the fight for DEI, not because we’re seeking something we haven’t earned. But, because we’re seeking to compete for employment and contract opportunities on a level playing field where we have an equal opportunity to achieve our goals and succeed. Just because some us get to the finish line doesn’t mean it’s a fair competition.

It’s time to crush racism! Let's remain vigilant and work together with DEI advocates nationwide to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive society where everyone has an opportunity to succeed based on merit.

Today, on Transgender Day of Visibility, we at Ponder Diversity Group want to express our deep commitment to the transgender and nonbinary communities. These communities, with their immense talent and resilience, deserve not just recognition but unwavering support and allyship.

Like Black people, transgender and nonbinary individuals often face injustice, bullying, and berating. No one should be deprived of their unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness regardless of their gender, gender identity, race or ethnicity.

As DEI advocates, we stand firm in our dedication to fighting these harmful lines and creating a safer, more inclusive world for all persons who are underserved, marginalized, disadvantaged and/or disproportionately impacted in our society. Every individual deserves to live authentically and without fear of discrimination, and to be recognized and celebrated.

We believe that every workplace and community should be a place of belonging for all. That's why we work diligently to ensure that organizations have access to information, education, and allyship tools for supporting diverse communities, including our transgender and nonbinary communities.

Let's continue to celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and work towards a future where everyone can thrive as their true selves.♥️

This is where I take off my pretty little gloves and respond to disturbing comments in another post suggesting that - DEI is dying and on life support. As a woman, member of the Black community and an attorney with significant knowledge about our nation’s EEO laws - I strongly disagree.

The Black community is committed to continuing and leading the fight for DEI, as we have been the most marginalized, underserved, disadvantaged, and discriminated against. Black women, who have always been unapologetically proud of our culture and proactively supportive of women, Blacks and other communities of color - won't let DEI die. We deeply care about it, its mission and its proven results. Not only does every study nationwide show the significant benefits of diversity, it’s simply the right thing to do.

Let's remain vigilant and work together to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive society where everyone has an opportunity to succeed based on merit. Do you agree?

Let’s all take a page from the book of Oscar-winning actor Lou Gossett Jr., a true believer in the humanity of people who fought racism with dignity and humor.

Humanity is defined by acquiring the ability to love, have compassion, have empathy, and be rational. By merging these definitions, we can understand that to deserve the right to be called human, we need to have the ability to love, have compassion, have empathy and be rational.

These qualities have the ability to change any person's path and life, particularly those in marginalized, underserved and disproportionately impacted areas. And this individual change, as small as it may be, will have a ripple effect, because it will affect their family and friends, workplaces, neighborhood and community - whether in a direct or an indirect way.

Unfortunately, we are living in a time affected by political extremists (ie, DEI naysayers) who come from different sets of beliefs. Extremism seeks to unite people from all different beliefs under one common purpose: "Be like me, or I will focus on erasing your existence."

This is the time to stand up and speak out for the humanity of all people regardless of their gender, ethnicity, age, political affiliation, sexual orientation, religious beliefs and disabilities. Don't wait for an invitation or until it becomes personal. Be determined to make an impact, have some courage. Use the power of your words and be heard.

The concept of humanity is derived from the love and compassion that humans have towards each other. It is a virtue that is consistent across all nations and cultures. Let's continue to strive for humanity in all that we do and all that we say. Let’s try to be more like Lou. May he Rest in Power.♥️

This is a lesson that every woman needs to learn - regardless of her position, title or profession. In a world full of “Mean Girls”, more of us should try to be more like Celine.

Celine put on her coat to present an award to Taylor Swift at The Grammy Awards so as to not upstage her since they had on similar dresses. Celine wanted Taylor to be the center of attention, not herself.

Business can be cutthroat, particularly when women are competing for the opportunities available. However, more women would be successful if we supported each other. It’s time we stop blaming men for all our problems and take a good look in the mirror.

Let’s support each other. Promote each other. Help each other. When the time comes for you to support another woman, don’t be afraid to let her shine - particularly if she’s a qualified Black professional or entrepreneur. She doesn’t have to be perfect. You aren’t.

Studies across the nation have shown that diversity can offer a broader range of perspectives, faster and better solutions, a larger and better pool of talent, improved workplace productivity, increased employee retention, better understanding of customers, increased customer loyalty, improved business innovation, better financial performance, and improved reputation.

As business leaders, we know that the business case for diversity, equity and inclusion is irrefutable. So, it’s our responsibility to drive change and create a more diverse and inclusive workforce and supply chain.

We can start by taking a lesson from Celine to support each other. There’s always enough room at the top.♥️
