Government Contractors Business Forum (GCBF)

The Government Contracting Business Forum (GCBF), established by PDG leadership about 15 years ago, is renowned for aiding established government contractors and consultants across multiple sectors. It aims to enhance their visibility, marketability, and success within the government marketplace. GCBF meetings focus on current and pending developments in government procurement regulations, policies, legislation, contract opportunities, and related best practices. The meetings, which include high-level discussions about new and cutting-edge procurement, contracting, business and legal information, provide the ideal setting for contractors and consultants of all sizes to network with each other and representatives of select agencies.

The ultimate goal of the GCBF is to level the playing field and provide effective networking and educational opportunities to government contractors and subcontractors that do not retain lobbyists. Please be advised that meetings of the GCBF were discontinued prior to the pandemic and will reconvene at the Willis Tower by 2025.

Why has DEI Become So Important?

Not only is DEI the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. Many studies have documented the vast benefits of DEI, including its capacity to promote shared experiences; provide broader range of perspectives; understand customers better; increase customer loyalty; receive faster and better solutions; develop larger and better talent pool; improve workplace productivity; increase employee retention; improve business innovation; generate better financial performance; and gain global appeal and improve reputation.

2024 DEI Statistics in the U.S.

Organizations seeking to receive the benefits of DEI should consider these important statistics:

1) Over 20% of women in the workplace have reported a decline in their support which is causing them to consider other employment options.

2) Over 80% of women who have been working remotely do not want to return back to their offices to work.

3) Two in three employees do not believe their employer supports their mental health and believe it impacts their daily productivity.

4) 89% of U.S. companies either have a DEI strategy or plan to implement one.

5) 58% of companies have provided DEI training to their employees, focused on unconscious bias and microaggressions, which has received positive feedback.

Recognition of PDG Leadership for DEI Achievement

The leadership of PDG has received numerous awards, accolades, and recognitions throughout their careers for their strong legal acumen, extensive community engagement and effective diversity advocacy. These acknowledgements were given by some of the top organizations in the U.S., including the U.S. Small Business Administration, National Women of Achievement, National Forum for Black Public Administrators, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, the City of Chicago/Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and Crain’s Chicago Business.

A MESSAGE

FROM THE CEO

Anita Ponder

Chief Executive Officer, General Counsel, and Chief of Diversity

Welcome to the leading boutique legal consultancy of Ponder Diversity Group LLC (PDG), where we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for government agencies, large corporations and nonprofit organizations. My personal journey in the legal profession is deeply rooted in my upbringing on the south side of Chicago under the tutelage of my remarkable mother, Dr. Gwindelle Wilson Ponder. Her legacy as an award-winning college and high school mathematics professor and community advocate for social justice profoundly influenced my resolve to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are more than just ideals; they are the core foundation of our firm’s mission and professional services.

Black History Month. So incredibly proud.

Let us continue their legacy and the legacy of our community.

Stand up and speak out for justice and equality. If not now - when?

My Superpower is helping government agencies and contractors to solve problems and achieve their goals. The year is off to a great start! I was recently asked to re-draft the diversity requirements for an agency with a significant procurement budget.

This is a moral and business imperative. Strong, focused DEI objectives will drive and strengthen your business to increase its profitability and minimize its legal liability.

This 7-Point Plan to advance DEI in the construction industry, presented by Deryl McKissack, will help your company towards achieving a much brighter future. This Plan should be adopted by every established company in the construction industry and every agency that has a DBE/MBE/WBE program to promote minority businesses.

Hostile job sites which intimidate, demean or endanger Blacks and other minorities should no longer be tolerated by the AEC industry - particularly by their diverse workers, the companies that hire them, and the agencies and organizations that allow them and their partners to compete for major contract opportunities. Eliminating job site discrimination of all kinds and work tensions make teamwork more effective, jobsites much safer, minimizes potential liability, and increases productivity and profitability. Advancing diversity in the construction industry gives organizations new perspectives that lead to much better and more creative solutions and results.

Please read this 7-Point Plan to combat racism and tell me if you stand with me in supporting it. Kudos to McKissack & McKissack for its strong leadership and commitment.

This is outrageous! Pay your women employees (regardless of their ethnicity) the same as you pay your male employees for performing the same job!

Recent studies indicate that “women experiencing pay discrimination lose hundreds of thousands of dollars over a lifetime compared to their white male counterparts.”

One study showed that women lost $406,280, white women lost $555,360, and black women lost $964,400 over their working lifetime. This pay gap is expected to rise post-pandemic.

Black women are being commended now for starting their own businesses at a greater pace than other women. Really?

Although I don’t represent all Black women, I can tell you that praise is not what they’re seeking from you - unless it comes with a big pay raise. They want equal employment opportunities, including equal resources and support to perform their job well, promotional opportunities, and pay equity.

I agree - that women need to do their part. “Seek out companies that adopt pay transparency and conduct regular pay equity audits…and advocate for your raises and promotions”.

Don’t be the “token” woman in your organization who is in a high level position receiving equal or more pay than your male counterparts - but who doesn’t support women beneath you that are not receiving equal pay.

Let’s work together to close the gap in gender inequality! If not now - when?

Don’t settle for mediocrity. If you believe that diversity, equity and inclusion are important, stop giving your law firms a pass.

You should require them to provide you a written report annually on the diversity of their partners at all tiers, and you should discuss their plan and schedule to increase their diversity.

You will get much better results from law firms with partners and leadership that have different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, and who have different opinions, strategies and professional networks to help you achieve your business goals. Just think about it.

Make no mistake about it. In this neck of the woods, we got Biden’s back on this….

“Judge Jackson has already inspired young Black women like my daughters to set their sights higher, and her confirmation will help them believe they can be anything they want to be,” President Obama said in a statement. “Like Justice Breyer, Judge Jackson understands that the law isn’t just about abstract theory. It’s about people’s lives.”

“Ketanji Brown Jackson has lived a life of distinction both as a lawyer and a jurist. If this historic nomination is confirmed, as it should be, she will follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest Supreme Court jurists of our time – not because she’s Black, not because she’s a woman, but because she’s a damn fine judge,” Mayor Lightfoot said.

“We're just so elated. This could mean so much for our community -- both the legal community and the Black woman community," said Nakhia Crossley, Esq., president of Black Women Lawyers' Association Chicago.

"The work of the Supreme Court influences and shapes what justice looks like in America," said Sandra Finley, president and CEO of League of Black Women. "To be able to have a perspective and a voice in that conversation is everything."

Cook County Public Defender Sharone R. Mitchell, Jr. : "Jackson knows that the justice system is not infallible - that we often get it wrong - and therefore how vital it is to protect the fundamental rights, liberties and dignity of everyone who interacts with the courts, both civil and criminal."

So, what say you?

Communication is power. Our voice reflects not only the depths of our soul, it tells the world whether we actually have one. It is an invaluable tool.

After years of practicing law and helping clients to achieve their procurement snd contracting goals, I’m finally getting comfortable with expressing myself on social media. Unfortunately, it took a pandemic and many days of working in isolation for me to get to this point. And admittedly, I’m still a work in progress.

I’ve learned a heck of alot throughout my brief career in government and at some of the top law firms in the nation. During these past few decades, I’ve learned that some folks will say or do practically anything to achieve their professional, business, financial or political goals - with total disregard for the truth or the potential impact of their statements.

Some of these folks include officials (past and present), their zealots, certain news organizations and media commentators, some clergy, hate groups, as well as, many “privileged” individuals who…. just want to maintain the status quo. The browning of America, the empowerment of women, and all this talk about diversity, equity and inclusion - makes them a little bit uncomfortable.

Because there are a lot of vulnerable people who hear these folks, who believe them and who do what they say (regardless of whether it’s right, ethical, moral, safe or legal) - using my voice is no longer an option. I think it’s my obligation to stand up and speak out against racial injustices and gender inequities. And, to continue to do whatever I can to help eradicate it. It isn’t enough to just do it when I’m getting paid. “To much is given, much is required.”

There are a lot of injustices in this world. We know it because we experience them. We hear and read about them everyday. There are also a lot of good, decent people - men and women from all ethnicities and backgrounds - who are doing some amazing things to level the playing field and make this world a better place for all. I join others who hear your voices and applaud your efforts. We see you, we stand with you, and we hope you continue to use the power of your voice to make a difference.

I love this photo! It represents the essence of the boys and men in my family, who I went to school with, who I work with, the diversity of my clients - and how I generally perceive Black people. If your perception of Blacks is different, you may have a problem. When you admit it and address it, the world will be a better place.

Let’s unite and work together to support each other, including these boys and those who look like them, by offering them an equal opportunity to realize their dreams and goals to be productive, law abiding responsible members of their communities and society. Say something positive and then - do something positive.
