Government Contractors Business Forum (GCBF)

The Government Contracting Business Forum (GCBF), established by PDG leadership about 15 years ago, is renowned for aiding established government contractors and consultants across multiple sectors. It aims to enhance their visibility, marketability, and success within the government marketplace. GCBF meetings focus on current and pending developments in government procurement regulations, policies, legislation, contract opportunities, and related best practices. The meetings, which include high-level discussions about new and cutting-edge procurement, contracting, business and legal information, provide the ideal setting for contractors and consultants of all sizes to network with each other and representatives of select agencies.

The ultimate goal of the GCBF is to level the playing field and provide effective networking and educational opportunities to government contractors and subcontractors that do not retain lobbyists. Please be advised that meetings of the GCBF were discontinued prior to the pandemic and will reconvene at the Willis Tower by 2025.

Why has DEI Become So Important?

Not only is DEI the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. Many studies have documented the vast benefits of DEI, including its capacity to promote shared experiences; provide broader range of perspectives; understand customers better; increase customer loyalty; receive faster and better solutions; develop larger and better talent pool; improve workplace productivity; increase employee retention; improve business innovation; generate better financial performance; and gain global appeal and improve reputation.

2024 DEI Statistics in the U.S.

Organizations seeking to receive the benefits of DEI should consider these important statistics:

1) Over 20% of women in the workplace have reported a decline in their support which is causing them to consider other employment options.

2) Over 80% of women who have been working remotely do not want to return back to their offices to work.

3) Two in three employees do not believe their employer supports their mental health and believe it impacts their daily productivity.

4) 89% of U.S. companies either have a DEI strategy or plan to implement one.

5) 58% of companies have provided DEI training to their employees, focused on unconscious bias and microaggressions, which has received positive feedback.

Recognition of PDG Leadership for DEI Achievement

The leadership of PDG has received numerous awards, accolades, and recognitions throughout their careers for their strong legal acumen, extensive community engagement and effective diversity advocacy. These acknowledgements were given by some of the top organizations in the U.S., including the U.S. Small Business Administration, National Women of Achievement, National Forum for Black Public Administrators, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, the City of Chicago/Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and Crain’s Chicago Business.

A MESSAGE

FROM THE CEO

Anita Ponder

Chief Executive Officer, General Counsel, and Chief of Diversity

Welcome to the leading boutique legal consultancy of Ponder Diversity Group LLC (PDG), where we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for government agencies, large corporations and nonprofit organizations. My personal journey in the legal profession is deeply rooted in my upbringing on the south side of Chicago under the tutelage of my remarkable mother, Dr. Gwindelle Wilson Ponder. Her legacy as an award-winning college and high school mathematics professor and community advocate for social justice profoundly influenced my resolve to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are more than just ideals; they are the core foundation of our firm’s mission and professional services.

our thoughts on linkedin

Hey Corporate America,

Stop hiring law firms that have a bad record retaining lawyers who are minorities and women — and then claiming that you support diversity, equity and inclusion.

That’s BULLSHIT. And, you know it.

There’s a reason why minority and women attorneys leave law firms. And, it’s not because they’re tired of practicing law.

They probably didn’t receive the support they needed to establish and/or maintain a significant book of business. (I was fortunate to survive and prosper.)

And, they no longer had confidence in the leadership of their firm. They didn’t trust their leaders to make good decisions that benefitted all of their employees.

And, for good reason.

Numbers don’t lie.

- If a law firm has only one or two “equity partners” who are Black or Latino - it is not a champion of diversity.

- If a law firm has no Black or Latino attorneys on its Executive Comittee - it is not a champion of diversity. (Not to mention if it has NO Executive Committee!)

- If a law firm has women or minority managing partners or a general counsel who have no real decisionmaking authority or power - it is not a champion of diversity.

- If a law firm has only a couple of attorneys of color who have worked at the firm for over 10 years - it is not a champion of diversity.

- If a law firm has never had a woman or minority Chairman or Managing Partner (over the entire firm) - it is not a champion of diversity.

- If a law firm doesn’t have an experienced Chief Diversity Officer with allocated resources and real impact on hiring/firing decisions - it is not a champion of diversity.

- If you’re reading this and thinking that I may be talking about your law firm or the ones you’re doing business with - you’re right. I probably am.

Numbers don’t lie.

The data shows that even modest improvements in diversity can have significant results for businesses.

“Just a 5 percent increase in the number of leaders who are women or are from minority racial/ethnic backgrounds separates companies that rank in the top 10 percent of financial performance from their below-average peers.”

Diversity truly matters.

Studies have shown that businesses that are more diverse tend to be more successful.

Law firms which have significant diversity have different perspectives, increased innovation and creativity, faster problem-solving, better decision-making…..and reduced employee turnover.

So, Corporate America - why do you keep giving the same law firms your business when they do not represent your values of diversity, equity and inclusion, and are not offering you the BEST solutions?

Does diversity truly matter to you?

If you think it’s time to raise your standards, let’s talk about your DEI plan. We think we can help.

Happy New Year!

It’s a very short life. Never ever settle for mediocrity. Our best days are not behind us. They are in front of us. There’s no reason not to go after what sets your soul on fire.

Introducing a new kind of law firm….

#lawfirm #bestlawyers #diversity

Does the law firms that provide you legal services have an “inclusive culture”? Don’t be fooled by slick marketing materials, creative social media posts or their so-called diverse DEI officers.

Look behind the curtain.

The legal industry has lagged way behind other professions in the diversity, equity, and inclusion space. It’s time that our clients demand greater inclusion and better legal services.

You deserve it.

Studies confirm that law firms with higher levels of diversity outperform their peers and provide better legal services. When a legal team includes attorneys of different genders, ages, ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations - it produces more creative, innovative and effective results.

It’s not just the right thing for law firms to do.

Women and minority lawyers are also demanding more. We want to work at inclusive law firms and are leaving the ones who aren’t. We have choices.

So, what really matters to us….

Work-life balance, collaboration, equitable compensation, the opportunity to work remotely, quality of work that we are assigned and good law firm management are high on our list of priorities.

Don’t accept mediocre legal services.

There are things that your law firms can do now to increase their inclusivity, such as engage diverse contract attorneys or work with a minority or women-owned law firm that has diverse attorneys while they recruit and hire more qualified, diverse attorneys.

Diverse contract attorneys and M/WBE law firms can help your law firms to produce much better results.

They will not only increase diversity of thought on your legal matters, but also, they can fill staffing gaps at law firms, lessen their internal workload, promote improved work-life balance, prevent attorney burnout, reduce the burdens associated with routine tasks, and increase team productivity and morale.

These factors impact the quality of legal services that you receive.

Your business or agency deserves good legal representation. And, there is absolutely no reason why your law firms should not provide it right now.

If they are not doing so, you also have choices. Call us. We’re happy to help you at Ponder Diversity Group.

Hey fellow smart business leaders and DEI advocates.

We all know that systematic racism is a widespread problem in practically every industry - including law. It benefits people who are NOT Black, minority, disadvantaged, marginalized and/or disproportionately impacted.

So I get why they (or you) may not be highly motivated to end it.

Practically every diversity study has shown that racism won’t continue to be a viable business strategy for you as demographics continue to change, diversity continues to impact consumer spending, and spending habits continue to change.

“When leaders know that systemic racism is a problem, yet choose to ignore it instead of taking action and investing in real change - that's a problem”.

That’s a problem. It’s a real problem.

In the below post - Kyle Cronk provides a “pathway” that folks should explore. (In my view, we need to do much more than read and watch DEI advocates though.)

We must commit to real change. Whatever that may be for you. Man up - make a commitment if you want to end systematic racism.

Kyle Cronk has some good recommendations…

✅ Believe (and support) Black people

✅ Any time you buy something - find a Black-owned business to buy it from

✅ Develop a “proactive approach to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging”…. like us at Ponder Diversity Group.

Find a pathway and commit to it. ⚫️

A day to remember. I just had brunch with Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson and First Lady Stacie Johnson!

Mayor-elect Johnson will be sworn in as Chicago's 57th mayor on Monday, May 15th. The anticipation is bringing back fond memories of when I worked for Mayor Washington shortly after finishing law school.

Unlike others who attended the brunch, my image below is not my photo with the Johnsons who I enjoyed talking with today.

In honor of Mother’s Day, the image is my beloved mother, Dr. Gwindelle Wilson Ponder, an award-winning distinguished educator who championed education as a CPS high school teacher, college professor and devoted mother. She had an unwavering commitment to her family, church and community. And, she touched the lives of countless persons from all walks of life.

My mother had a lot in common with the Johnsons including - humility, integrity and compassion for others, as well as an appreciation for education, philanthropy and public service.

She taught me self confidence; to be good to my fellow man and woman; to be faithful and thankful for my blessings; to pursue and value my education; to give back to society and my community; and to help the disadvantaged - particularly Blacks, other persons of color and women.

She believed, as do I - to whom much is given, much will be required (Luke 12:48).

Although my mother passed away several years ago, she and my clients inspired me to start my own business this year, Ponder Diversity Group LLC, after 30+ years of being a partner in some of the nation’s top law firms as the Director of Government Contracts and Supplier Diversity.

My law firm’s focus is social equity and racial justice (ie, diversity, equity and inclusion). We seek to change the world - one client at a time.

We represent government agencies, established contractors, major corporations, and not for profit organizations nationwide that seek to develop and implement laws, policies, regulations, legislation and/or programs that advance supplier diversity and/or workplace diversity.

Today, Brandon lovingly acknowledged some of the important women in his life, including Stacie, his aunt (who complimented my attire!) and certain elected officials who were in attendance at the brunch. I can say with confidence that he appreciates strong, purposeful, determined women. He has our back in Chicago. And, we have his.

As we honor and acknowledge the special women in our lives on this Mother’s Day, let’s commit to do whatever we can, everyday, to promote their equity and inclusion as employees and business owners.

Let’s work together to make this City a better place for all.

Happy Mother’s Day to mothers…. and to all who appreciate the significant contributions of women.

When I worked for Mayor Washington as the Director of Contract Compliance over the City’s Disadvantaged, Minority and Women Business Enterprise (DBE/MBE/WBE) Progam, I told prospective bidders for City contracts: “Either you include minority and women businesses on your team (as required in the solicitation) or you don’t do business with us.” As a result, the participation of diverse businesses, particularly on construction contracts, drastically increased, as well as the employment of minorities and women.

I agree - diversity, equity and inclusion makes our country great. In the spirit of Human Rights Day, let’s applaud and support the efforts of those here and abroad, regardless of their nationality, political affiliation, position or title, who provide or promote equal opportunities for others, so that they can achieve or exceed their business and employment aspirations.

Happy Women’s History Month! To all the phenomenal women out here who are leaving their footprints in the road for other women to prosper, to fulfill their dreams, and to become their very best.

I, along with some of my favorite ladies, have a special video message for you!

Please share it with the phenomenal women in your life.

Little things in life matter.

I read a lot of posts on LinkedIn about racism against persons of color - particularly Black women.

And, I respond to a lot of posts regarding diversity, equity and inclusion of persons of color and women, regardless of their ethnicity.

It’s intentional.

The mission of our newly organized law firm is to provide professional consultation and guidance to government agencies, major corporations and government contractors that seek to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in their workforce and vendor pool.

I’m an overachiever. I want to change the world.

Then, I hear this guy (William H. McRaven) who blew me away (and reaffirmed our mission)…

🟢Don’t back down from sharks

🟢Measure a person by the size of their heart

🟢Give people the power of hope

🟢Take risks

🟢Lift up the downtrodden

All the things my mother taught me.

Take a listen. If this doesn’t touch your heart and soul - nothing will.

Then, let me know if you share our values and our mission.

If you do, we welcome the opportunity to collaborate with you to make this world a better place for us all.
